Linda Rief teaches middle school in Durham, New Hampshire and is an instructor in the University of New Hampshire's Summer Literacy Institute. A national and international presenter on issues of adolescent literacy, she is also a recipient of NCTE's Edwin A. Hoey Award for Outstanding Middle School Educator in the English Language Arts. Her newest book is The Quickwrite Handbook: 100 Mentor Texts to Jumpstart Your Students' Thinking and Writing. She is also the author or coeditor of many Heinemann titles, including Read Write Teach, Inside the Writer's-Reader's Notebook, The Writer's-Reader's Notebook, Adolescent Literacy, Vision and Voice, and Seeking Diversity. In 2000, Linda was the recipient of NCTE's Edwin A. Hoey Award for Outstanding Middle School Educator in the English/Language Arts. I had the great pleasure of taking a writing class with Linda and she is the best presenter. This is probably my favorite book yet. It is SO practical. After reading the first chapter, I had a lesson all ready for the first day of school. Well worth the price!!!

I am using this with my multi-grade level classes. They are responding well to them. I can’t use these exactly as quick writes, my kids need a bit more guided structure, but having a mentor text to support their writing has been good. I have been looking for something like this for a long time. We are just getting started, but so far so go.

I love these! I teach high school English in an alternative school, attendance and behavior is sporadic at best. This book is a lifesaver, the pages come with a poem or excerpt and space to start writing - each page has a sidebar with instructions. Ideally, I use these as a pre write but realistically , my students complete these for participation , then work on a final copy to submit for a grade. Great resource in the classroom.

About the Author
Dr. Michael A. de Rooij is Executive Director of Applications Engineering at Efficient Power Conversion Corporation (EPC) head quartered in El Segundo, CA. Prior to joining EPC he worked at Windspire Energy in the capacity of Director of Product development where he helped develop the next generation of small vertical-axis wind turbine inverters. From 2002 to 2008, Dr. de Rooij worked as a Senior Engineer at the GE Global Research Center, located in Niskayuna, NY. Before joining GE, Dr. de Rooij conducted Post Doctoral studies on power electronic integration, packaging and a high frequency MOSFET Gate-driver at the Center for Power Electronic Systems (CPES) at The Virginia Polytechnic and State University. From 1998 through 2000 he was employed in the capacity of senior designer at IMV Victron in Groningen, The Netherlands, where his duties included the design of single-phase uninterruptible power supplies in the power range 600 VA through 10 kVA.

Dr. de Rooij received his Ph.D. from the Rand Afrikaans University (now called The University of Johannesburg), South Africa in 1998. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and is author and co-author of over 25 international publications. Dr. de Rooij most recently co-authored GaN Transistors for Efficient Power Conversion, a textbook on gallium nitride technology. In addition, he has been granted 21 US and International patents and 19 US and International pending patent applications.

Dr. de Rooij s research interests and activities include, wireless power transfer, solid-state high-frequency power converters and devices, uninterruptible power supplies, integration of power electronic converters, power electronic packaging, induction heating, photovoltaic converters, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Systems, RF amplifiers and gate drivers with protection features.

This was a really cute book. Some concepts made me uncomfortable, but it was fast and popcorny, and I really liked the narrators. Andi Arnt especially has this lovely quality to her voice where it seems breathy but sincere. I really enjoyed it.That being said, it was really jarring that, despite the fact that there were two narrators, they didn't have assigned characters and would jump back and forth between who voiced what characters. As they have such drastically different voices, it would take me out of the story when they voiced characters who were previously voiced by the other narrator.
