As the title suggests, this book examines whether Iron Man could exist in the real world. As with Michio Kaku’s book “Physics of the Impossible”, answering the question involves defining the various meanings of “impossible.”One way to parse the question is, “Is Iron Man possible today given the existing state of technology?” In and of itself, this question is of limited interest because the answer is, “no.” There’s certainly a demand, and so if Iron Man could exist given current technology, he probably would. That’s not to say it isn’t interesting to learn about what technologies are holding us back and where the cutting edge of relevant technologies lies—both of which are addressed by the book.Still, a more interesting inquiry is, “Will Iron Man ever be reality given the physical laws that we know to govern the universe?” While more intriguing, it’s also a harder question to definitively answer. It’s impossible to foresee all the technological developments that might come along to answer the seemingly insurmountable challenges (e.g. Tony Stark’s inevitable Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).) The book deals with the critical question of what challenges would have to be overcome for Iron Man to be reality. As Zehr suggests, the appeal of Iron Man is that he’s considered to be among superheroes for the common man. Like Batman, the sufficiently bright and diligent nerd may fantasize that, “That could be me.” You or I can’t be Superman or Wolverine, but given enough money, smarts, and training we could be Batman, or—even better—pilot the Iron Man suit. Put in this light, the book may seem like just another frivolous attempt to capitalize on the popularity of superheroes to sell books. However, there’s actually a great deal of food for thought packed in the book. Like others, I read the book because its title is “Inventing Iron Man” and not “Neuro-motor control of a self-propelled armor system” or some other suitably scholarly title.Dr. Zehr has the bona fides to delve into this topic. He is a Professor who investigates questions of how the nervous system controls movement. That subject may not constitute the sum total of critical concerns, but it’s one of the most important challenges. For Iron Man to move the way he does in the movies and comic books, Tony Stark’s impulses to move have to be transmitted seamlessly to the servo-motors that move the suit. From dodging Col. Rhodes’ (i.e. War Machine’s) punches to ducking RPGs, Stark can’t be quick enough if he has to manually steer the device. Then, of course, there’s the issue of feedback. Any neophyte meditator who’s had his or her foot fall sound asleep will know how difficult it is to walk surefootedly when one can’t feel anything through one’s foot.[“Iron Man 3” movie spoiler commentary in this paragraph.] One of the most damning challenges for making Iron Man a reality is the high probability of severe concussions. Let’s say you make the suit out of a material that is virtually indestructible? This may be possible. However, the pilot’s mushy brain is still sloshing around inside that impenetrable armor. One can remotely pilot the suit in order to negate this (as has been done in the comic books and the third movie), but—at that point—is it still Iron Man? I know from a writer’s perspective it’s a lot harder to maintain tension if there’s nothing human on the line. In the third movie about 30 autonomously piloted suits get wiped out and the viewer doesn’t care—the only source of tension is that Tony Stark is without armor half the time. Some of the most interesting discussions are about where the current state of the art lies with respect to: a.) direct mind control over mechanical systems; b.) a “flying suit”; and c.) robotic movement enhancers. Zehr conducts interviews with those engineers and technologists involved in such technologies, and finds out where we are presently. Letter “a” above seems to be the least developed of the three technologies, but they are all active lines of research.I enjoyed this book and found it interesting. I think anyone who is interested in the state of technology and its limits will find it a nice pop-sci introduction to the subject. The use of superheroes as a pedagogic device may be overdone, but it continues to work because we are fascinated by the edge of possibility, and that’s what superheroes represent.

Building one myself in gargage

an intriguing, well written book. i've only read the first 2 chapters, but I don't see it slowing down. This is my first e-book and i love the ease of download and it is easy to read on my ipad.

Wish I had the money and time to build a suit!

We have actually purchased several copies of this book, not so much for content, but for the idea of it. Our engineering friends have definitely enjoyed it.

Inventing Iron man: a good book for those interested in the possibility of 'powered exoskeletons' and related devices. not so good in actually presenting a possibility of specifically Iron Man or the technical side of things. Much is explained about the feasibility, or lack thereof, for these suits, and putting humans inside them.No detail, for example, is given of recent advances in nanotechnology, materials, power generating/energy harvesting devices, actuators, etc, which could make an "Iron Man" suit actually practical within our lifetime. There's a good reason the U.S. military is funding projects like this. As an electrical Engineer who enjoys seeing the technical descriptions and attempts to reverse-engineer devices, this exploration was intriguing, but lacked further exploration. The Iron man suit, is after all, the pinnacle of a futuristic technology. Explaining it away as unfeasable using current technology is only unfair. That is all.

Review by Steven King, MBA, MEdSometimes, when making an emphatic point to students, a teacher's best intentions do not always accomplish what he thinks they should. As an unashamed Batman devotee, once upon a time I made a passing reference to the greatness of The Dark Knight as a prelude to one of my lessons. Prior to delving into the world of mathematics with this group of high school students I said something akin to, "Just imagine--a mere man who became a tremendous superhero. No one could be as great as Batman." Without missing a beat, one of the students in the middle of the class piped up, "Have you ever heard of Iron Man?" With tongue-in-cheek, I told him I did, but I would only award extra credit for receipt of Batman paraphernalia. As comic book denizens will know, Iron Man is the invention of Tony Stark, a 30-something genius inventor who inherited Stark Industries from his father at the tender age of 21. Prior to that, at age 15 his penchant for brilliance took him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he would earn two college degrees: one in physics and the other in engineering. On the most recent Forbes Fictional 15, his net worth of $9.4B places him at the number six slot - two spots above the much more conservative true identify of Batman, Bruce Wayne (Whose $7B net worth is still nothing upon which to sneeze.). Incidentally, he is right behind #5 Jed Clampett (The Beverly Hillbillies), but oil inheritance and country living doesn't sell any comic books.Dr. Paul Zehr answers my former student's query with an insightful analysis about the Golden Avenger. His Inventing Iron Man: The Possibility of a Human Machine pulls back the curtain to determine the plausibility of such an endeavor--actually constructing a fighting machine such as the one popularized by Tony Stark in the comic book series.Zehr's analysis is compelling as he seeks to establish the credibility of Iron Man. In the course of his narrative he scrutinizes such topics as:* What time frame would be required to produce a pilot sufficiently trained for the job?* The timeline required to produce the actual suit, based upon applicable technological trends.* Scientific advances in brain-machine interfaces and the type implied in the Iron Man design.* Effects of alcohol intoxication upon the ability of an Iron Man character (Any Iron Man devotee should recognize that Tony Stark drinks a wee bit much). As I read this account, I found Zehr's development of neuroprosthetics particularly intriguing. Given his doctoral work in neuroscience, he has the uncanny ability of avoiding strained technical jargon in favor of skillfully leading the novice through what would otherwise prove to be a cerebral quagmire. One learns that Iron Man's suit would have to have been an advanced brain-machine interface that merely augmented the neural (and physical) abilities of its wearer. As Mr. Stark even said, "I am Iron Man. The suit and I are one."Previously, I had the privilege (and pleasure) of reading Dr. Zehr's "Becoming Batman." Contrasted with this work, his writing seems to be much freer and more comfortable--giving the reader an insightful, yet thoroughly enjoyable look into the possibility of becoming Iron Man.Perhaps authoring a few books about superheroes implies that Dr. Zehr has a hidden desire to offer an elective course in their mythos at the University of Victoria, British Columbia. Inventing Iron Man is not merely a scientific work, it also includes plentiful illustrations and frequent comic book quotes to keep Iron Man fans interested. An appendix detailing milestones in Iron Man's development rounds off this work before Zehr's inclusion of an impressive bibliography for those seeking additional information.Highly commended to all who enjoy a look into the world of superheroes--but science nerds will like it, too.

I usually don't spend this kind of money for a speaker's ideas. I've been delving into Jungian archetypes and, facing a long drive over several days, decided to spend part of that time listening to Myss's ideas. I am so glad that I made the purchase.I had become acquainted with Myss's ideas through an earlier 4-tape set. Myss has honed her skill as a speaker in the interim. She fleshes out her views of such archetypes as the mother, magician, warrior, victim, and so on with often humorous and lively examples. Her purpose is to inspire each of us to know ourselves and others more completely by living a "symbolic life" leading to personal and spiritual growth and transformation. This CD set seems to retain its value for resale, so when I have completely absorbed its engrossing lessons, I will be able to pass it on.

These are great CDs for listening to when your long distance driving. They are packed with information about ow to identify the arch types in your self as well as others. This was a great investment for me because the book was difficult to follow and I kept wanting to high light every thing. You will find your self listening to this series more than a couple of times because every time you play them you hear something you missed before. Packed full of information. You won't be disappointed. Also very little repeat of material you have heard on her other programs.

I have been disappointed in the lack of coverage concerning archetypes - most books deal with one archetype and it's aspects in depth but don't deal with the rest of the archetypes - leaves you wanting more.......As always, Caroline Myss does another fantastic job of teaching a difficult and involved subject -- Archetypes. Granted I am only on the 7th of 11 CD's but I am fascinated with this subject. I am just starting my journey on this path which started while reading / listening to Ms. Myss past work and when I watched a DVD interview with Bill Moyer and Joseph Campbell -- 'The Power of Myth' -- which only touched upon archetypes. I don't believe my thinking is advanced enough to delve into Carl Gustav Jung and his works on archetypes -- so I was quite pleased to find this CD audio set by Ms. Myss and I didn't hesitate to purchase it.She divides the different archetypes into 8 families and then details the description and characteristics of the different archetypes in each family, their light & shadow sides, fate vs. destiny, being congruent, finding your `always characteristics' to pin down your own archetypes...........etc. There is so much information that I will be listening to these CD's over and over again....... Check out Ms. Myss' website concerning Archetypes and Sacred Contracts also.... I 'highly recommend' her work - whether it's her books or her audio tapes & CD's.

Anything by Caroline Myss is divinely inspired. This is a great course; divided into easy to follow discs whether one listens to them in sequence or 'cafeteria style' Caroline Myss is a gifted and brilliant educator. And.........I bought this on discs - old fashioned cds' Yay!!!!

Very interesting. I don't know how she remembers all this information. I listened on my way down to Miami from Maryland. It does get overwhelming after a while. So much to remember. I think I would have to listen over and over. She must have a true gift to remember all this.

I was familiar with the Sacred Contracts material, but felt weak enough in in my archetype knowledge to put off working on my archetypal wheel and chart of origin. This CD set filled in the gap quite nicely. Caroline Myss is so personable in her presentations, that you feel you are in conversation with her. I've since completed my chart of origin and am continuing to build on the knowledge gained from listening to these CDs.

A Challenging and provocative understanding of life and how we fit into it's plan for us

Caroling is one of the most amazing teachers on the planet

The Rum Diary: A NovelBy Hunter S. Thompson

Made into a major motion picture starring Johnny Depp, The Rum Diary—a national bestseller and New York Times Notable Book—is Hunter S. Thompson’s brilliant love story of jealousy, treachery, and violent lust in the Caribbean.

Begun in 1959 by a twenty-two-year-old Hunter S. Thompson, The Rum Diary is a brilliantly tangled love story of jealousy, treachery, and violent alcoholic lust in the Caribbean boomtown that was San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the late 1950s. The narrator, freelance journalist Paul Kemp, irresistibly drawn to a sexy, mysterious woman, is soon thrust into a world where corruption and get-rich-quick schemes rule and anything (including murder) is permissible. Exuberant and mad, youthful and energetic, this dazzling comedic romp provides a fictional excursion as riveting and outrageous as Thompson’s Fear and Loathing books.

Amazon.com Review
"Disgusting as he usually was," Hunter Thompson writes in this, his 1959 novel, "on rare occasions he showed flashes of a stagnant intelligence. But his brain was so rotted with drink and dissolute living that whenever he put it to work it behaved like an old engine that had gone haywire from being dipped in lard." Surprise! Thompson isn't writing about himself, but one of the other, older, aimlessly carousing newspapermen in Puerto Rico, a guy called Moberg whose chief achievement is the ability to find his car after a night's drinking because it stinks so much. (I can smell it for blocks, he boasts.) The autobiographical hero, Paul Kemp, is 30, trapped in a dead-end job (Thompson wound up writing for a bowling magazine), and feeling as if his big-time writer dreams, soaked in Fitzgerald and Hemingway, are evaporating as rapidly as the rum in his fist.

In fact, Thompson was only 22 when he wrote The Rum Diary, but his fear of winding up like Moberg was well founded. What saved him was the fantastic conflagration of the 1960s, a fiery wind on which the reptilian wings of his prose style could catch and soar to the cackling heights of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Puerto Rico in 1959 doesn't have bad craziness enough to offer Thompson--just a routine drunken-reporter stomping by local cops and a riot over Kemp's friend's temptress girlfriend, a scantily imagined Smith College alumna who likes to strip nude on beaches and in nightclubs to taunt men.

Thompson's prose style only intermittently takes tentative flight--compare the stomping scenes in this book with his breakthrough, Hell's Angels--but it's interesting to see him so nakedly reveal his sensitive innards, before the celebrated clownish carapace grew in. It's also interesting to see how he improved this full version of the novel from the more raw (and racist) excerpts found in the 1990 collection Songs of the Doomed (available on audiocassette, partly narrated by Thompson). --Tim Appelo

From Publishers Weekly
When the celebrated iconoclast was a feisty kid working for an English-language newspaper in San Juan 40 years ago, he wrote, and then put aside, a novel, which is here resurrected. It is very much a young man's book, clearly based on Thompson's own situation and some of the peopleAmostly drunks and layaboutsAwho gravitated to a loosely supervised journalistic stint in the tropics. An introduction sets the scene, and the novel that follows is almost equally documentary in tone: young Kemp comes aboard at the News, gets to know its perpetually embattled proprietor and some of his feckless staff. He observes the island, as the invasion of American tourists and values is just beginning to change its lazy, sun-struck character. He gets involved in a drunken fight with the police, is thrown in jail, bailed out and goes in for a little shame-faced PR writing. He comes between a wild colleague and the equally unbuttoned young Connecticut girl he has brought out to visit him, and the end is a youth's easy-won nostalgia for a silly, drunken time. As he always has done, Thompson lays on the drinking and general hell-raising very thick (the amount of rum consumed would dry up a distillery) and indulges flashes of bad temper toward commercialism while always showing a willingness to do whatever it takes to make a buck. His style is less hallucinatory and exclamatory than it later became, but the groundwork is there. The best parts of the book are its occasional, almost grudging, acknowledgments of natural beauty; the people in it are no more than props. Author tour.

From Library Journal
Thompson has long been known as the father of gonzo journalism. His essays?part fact, part fiction?on politics, media, and the culture of his America can be as beautiful as a poem or as brutal as today's news. The Rum Diary, begun in 1959, is his first novel. It is also an autobiography, for he is evident in the character of Paul Kemp, a young writer new to Puerto Rico: "a seeker, a mover, a malcontent." Kemp has accepted a job on the Daily News, the English-language paper in San Juan. He soon meets the paper's photographer, Sala, and another young reporter, Yeaman. Together, they embark on a strange odyssey?a drunken, carousing journey through the Caribbean of the 1950s. Amazingly beautiful passages, well read by Campbell Scott, run dead end into dark ugly reminders of the violence, fear, and loathing that populate Thompson's later work (e.g., Songs of the Doomed, Audio Reviews, LJ 6/15/91) . Recommended for all libraries with an interest in politics, journalism, and American literature.?Theresa Connors, Arkansas Tech Univ., Russellville

“A masterful and superbly written history of the Indians of the Ayachucho region during the first century after the conquest, Stern’s work greatly advances research into Andean society.”—Jeffrey L. Klaiber, S. J., The Americas

To Steve J. Stern, the 1492 arrival of Columbus in America 'symbolizes a historical reconfiguration of world magnitude.' The quincentennial of that event challenged Stern to reexamine the consequences and meanings of the European conquest of the Americas. This expanded edition of Peru's Indian Peoples and the Challenge of Spanish Conquest includes Stern's 1992 reflections on the ten years of historical interpretation that have passed since the book's original publication--setting his analysis of Huamanga in a larger perspective.

Great and easy read!

Somewhat interesting text. I did not find it to be well-written though.

I was captivated by Mario Vargas Llosa's disturbing novel, Death in the Andes. It is structurally a mystery story, but it can be best characterized as a compelling portrait of political violence in contemporary Peru. Mario Vargas Llosa is a captivating story teller and I found myself wanting to know more about the people that inhabit the harsh mountains of Peru."Peru's Indian Peoples and the Challenge of Spanish Conquest - Huamanga to 1640" by Steve J. Stern exactly met my needs. This scholarly text tells the story of how conquest transformed a resilient and vigorous people into an inferior caste of Andean Indians. The geographical focus is a mountainous region in southwest Peru dominated by the city Huamanga (today known as Ayacucho, a city not too distant from the fictional town of Naccos, the setting for Death in the Andes). The lengthy title, "Peru's Indian Peoples and the Challenge of Spanish Conquest - Huamanga to 1640", may be a little intimidating, but the book is well-written and is largely accessible without undue effort. The first chapter paints an intriguing view of a pre-Columbian society based on complex reciprocity relationships between members of extended families or kinships called ayllus. These arrangements allowed dispersed groups to exploit isolated, island-like, ecological niches like cold high mountain pastures or low dry valleys while depending upon others for products grown or created elsewhere. The ethnic groups native to Huamanga welcomed the overthrow of the Incas and allied themselves quickly with the victorious Spaniards. "Local communities sacked warehouses once dedicated to the discredited Incas." Chapter 2 examines the rise and subsequent demise of these post-Incaic alliances with the Spanish.Chapter 3, "A Historical Watershed", describes the revival of Andean religious fervor (the Taki Onqoy) and an unsuccessful effort to expel the Spanish colonizers. Remarkably, the Spanish, under the formidable leadership of Don Francisco de Toledo, within a decade had dramatically revised their colonial structure, and largely eliminated any possibility of future revolt by the Andean Indians.Chapter 4 details the political economy of colonialism in the Huamanga region while chapter 5 investigates the contentious legal battles between the Indians and the colonizing elite under the Spanish judicial system. Both chapters are intriguing, but are more difficult for the non-specialist. I was surprised by how carefully the Spanish structured the taxation system; it siphoned away the maximum wealth without completely devastating the Andean economy. The Indians resisted this economic oppression through evasion as well as by tenaciously exploiting the Spanish legal system to protect their rights. The final three chapters explore the ways in which the Andean Indians gradually adapted to Spanish colonization and how this adaptation fostered a political economy of dependence. Stern devotes chapter 7 to the "tragedy of success", the story of the successful few that escaped the burdens of the peasantry by becoming integrated into the ruling Spanish colonial structure. The final chapter, Huamanga's colonial heritage, admits that much has changed in modern times, but argues that "the present seems to superimpose itself upon the past, not destroy it."
