Inger Furseth, Dr. polit, is a sociologist and professor at the University of Oslo, Norway and research associate at University of Southern California. She has written several articles and books, such as From Quest for Truth to Being Yourself: Religious Change in Life Stories (2006), and co-authored An Introduction to the Sociology of Religion: Classical and Contemporary Perspectives (2006). She has developed and taught several courses on research design and writing for students and faculty at the University of Oslo and other Norwegian universities and colleges.

Euris L. Everett, MA, has a BA with a major in teaching and an MA in organizational management. Since 1977 he has developed classes and taught in the US and Norway on motivation, decision making, planning and writing. He is the director of the Career Design Institute in Santa Maria, California.

Fundamentals of radioactivity properties, radionuclide decay, calculations involved, and methods of detection provide the basis for a thorough understanding of the analytical procedures. Therefore, the new Handbook of Radioactivity Analysis is also suitable as a teaching text for university and professional training courses.

About the Author
Michael F. L’Annunziata earned his undergraduate B.Sc. degree in Chemistry in 1965 from St. Edward’s University and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in 1967 and 1970 at the University of Arizona. His graduate thesis research in the 1960s was carried out under a research contract with the then U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (U.S. AEC). The research work dealt with the analysis of radionuclides and chemical remediation of the environment in the event of possible nuclear war and fission product fallout. His main research interests have been focused on the development of chemical and instrumental methods for the detection and measurement of radioactive nuclides and the utilization of radionuclides as tracers in biological research. L’Annunziata was formerly Head of Fellowships and Training at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria; and he has served as a representative for the IAEA in fact-finding, planning, and implementation assignments on peaceful applications of nuclear energy for development in over 50 countries of the world from 1976 to 2007. He is the author and editor of several books including “Radionuclide Tracers, Their Detection and Measurement” published in 1987 and the “Handbook of Radioactivity Analysis” now in its third edition published in 2012. His more lengthy biography has been included in the annual editions of “Who’s Who in the World” from 1987 to 2016.

Their coverage of Markowitz portfolio theory, CAPM, and APT is quite thorough and very readable. As noted in the Preface, several different groups could benefit from using this book including portfolio managers, hedge fund managers, financial executives, and financial engineers. The text is very flexible. For example, it could be used in an undergraduate course by assigning Chapters 1, Appendix to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 12, 16, and 18 and omit most of the footnotes and end-of-chapter Appendices. A more advanced course could use any of the chapters that fits the teacher's interests. Overall, this is a great addition to the available textbooks on portfolio analysis.

This is a book about the foundations of modern portfolio theory, but it goes further. It also delves into unexpected areas, like the VaR model of risk management, which rests on Markowitz's variance-covariance model. The material is written for readers with either practical or academic interest in financial economics. The choice of the material discussed cannot get closer to what is really important. And, the organization and reading ease make it accessible.
